What is School-wide PBIS?
Definition
School-wide positive behavior intervention and support (SW-PBIS) is a system of tools and strategies for defining, teaching, acknowledging appropriate behavior, and correcting inappropriate behavior. It is a framework for creating customized school systems that support student outcomes and academic success. SW-PBIS is for the whole school, it is preventative, and it changes the paradigm of focus from negative behaviors and exchanges to positive expectations and interactions.
There are four main elements in SW-PBIS:
- Customized practices to support student behavior, such as defining and teaching appropriate behavior.
- Systems of support for educators in the school, such as school-wide behavioral expectations, indicators, and coaching.
- Data-based decision making, which is the cornerstone of the behavior problem-solving process.
- And the combination of these enable school-wide outcomes, which promote social proficiency and academic success.
These four elements are guided by six important principles:
- Develop a continuum of scientifically based behavior and academic interventions and supports
- Use data to make decisions and solve problems
- Arrange the environment to prevent the development and occurrence of problem behavior
- Teach and encourage pro-social skills and behaviors
- Implement evidence-based behavioral practices with fidelity and accountability
- Screen universally and monitor student performance & progress continuously
MV3
Positive Reinforcement/Incentives
When students show the MV3 expectations, their behavior is positively reinforced with Golden Tickets. A student can earn a Golden Ticket from any staff member in the building for being responsible, respectful, and safe. Students can bring home with Golden Tickets to show their family members that they have been following the MV3.
When a student earns a Golden ticket they write their name in a Bingo space on their classroom PBIS BINGO Board. Every Friday a Bingo space is called and the students whose name is in that spot that is called gets to go pick a prize from the School Store!
Students must earn 10 Golden Tickets a month to participate in the PBIS Monthly Incentives. If a student earns MORE than 10 Golden Tickets their name gets placed in the end of the month raffle for a prize! Tickets earned are not valid after the month they are earned (cannot carry over to the next month). Students may not share, or “trade” MV3 tickets as these are for individual reinforcement.
Class Incentives
Students can earn trophies as a class in Art, Music, PE, and Library. The class has a Trophy board on the wall outside their classroom. Once the class earns 10 trophies the class will have a reward day during their special time the next class. After the reward-the Trophy Tracker board will be cleared to start again.
Each grade level has a large cookie on the wall in the cafeteria. Grades earn M&M’s to be placed on their cookie for following the MV3 in the cafeteria during lunch. Once the grade earns all of their M&M’s on their cookie, the grade gets a reward day-to sit anywhere for one day. After the reward-the cookie is cleared to start again.
